U.S Mission / US Embassy Recruitment 2022 featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed

There are two ways to get a job at a US Embassy. If you are a US citizen, then you join the Foreign Service, which is a long and involved process, including passing a written and an oral exam and waiting on a waiting list. You have to go where they send you, although you can express preferences. If you are not a US citizen, then you can be hired by the US embassy in your country as “locally engaged staff.” The requirements vary per location, but generally require excellent English, a significant university education, and at least some expertise, such as administration or management skills. You must have a good interviewing style and a commitment to your profession. Sometimes they hire new university graduates because they are looking for a person who will be there a long time. You have to be able to get along well with Americans, and don’t expect a good salary. They will pay the average wage for a professional in your country. They pay in local currency and not in US dollars. Also, it doesn’t grant you any special immigration status at first, although if you work at an embassy for 15 years or more they will help you get immigration status to the US if you want.

Pros

Stable job, fixed work hours, up to 50 paid work days a month, generous benefits, great work environment etc.

Working for a Contractor

Administrative (Current Employee) – Baghdad, IQ – October 30, 2018
Living at the Embassy can’t be beat. Working as a contractor, not so much. There are still some old time people who think contractors are beneath them. This place would not survive without contractors. The pay is not as good as it used to be, but it is much safer.
