IPAS Nigeria Recruitment 2022

ABOUT IPAS NIGERIA

Our work began in 1973, with the provision of life-saving reproductive health technologies for health systems in several countries. Since then, we have experienced amazing growth and change as an organization, but our singular commitment to expand access to abortion has remained constant. Why? Because abortion is essential health care to which everyone has a right. And because access to abortion and contraception is necessary to ensure reproductive justice for all.

Today we work on five continents with a comprehensive approach that centers the needs of those who seek abortion care. We aim to build sustainable abortion ecosystems that address all factors impacting a person’s ability to access abortion—from individual health knowledge, to social and community support, to a trained health workforce, to political leadership and supportive laws. To that end, we train providers and work with health systems to ensure accessible, high-quality abortion services—including the right and ability to self-manage an abortion with pills.

We conduct research with the goal of turning policy into practice. We also partner with local organizations to educate communities on reproductive health and rights, to advocate for legal abortion, and to support local champions for reproductive justice.

As part of our dedication to advancing equity and justice, Ipas is now engaged in a years-long journey to shift power within our organization. We will transform into a global network with dispersed authority, power and leadership—sharing resources, knowledge and expertise across the many countries where Ipas works—yet we’ll remain bound by our common vision and mission. As we evolve, we will not waver in our commitment to ensure that all people have bodily autonomy and can access the essential health care they need.

IPAS Nigeria Recruitment 2022

Ipas Nigeria works to increase women’s access to vital reproductive health and family planning services and to ensure that high-quality treatment for complications of unsafe abortion (postabortion care) is available. Ipas Nigeria collaborates with alliances and partners to advocate for laws and policies that address sexual violence—and to develop youth champions for safe, legal abortion.

We also train police officers on the abortion law and the consequences of unsafe abortion, which in turn reduces unjustified accusations and arrests of women seeking life-saving reproductive health services and the providers who care for them. At the community level, Ipas Nigeria works to increase knowledge around sexual and reproductive health, reduce abortion stigma, and ensure women know where to seek care for complications of unsafe abortion.

Unsafe abortion is one of the most significant and preventable causes of maternal death and injury in Nigeria, which has one of the world’s highest maternal death rates. Abortion is illegal except to save the life of the woman, and procedures are often inaccessible even for women who meet this requirement—forcing women to seek out clandestine and unsafe procedures. In addition, millions of people have been displaced within Nigeria since 2012 due to the Boko Haram insurgency, resulting in a humanitarian crisis in which women and girls are at even higher risk for sexual violence and unwanted pregnancy—and have little to no access to reproductive health care.

IPAS Nigeria Recruitment 2022

At Ipas, we’re working with partners to build sustainable abortion ecosystems. Our comprehensive approach works across institutions and communities and recognizes there are multiple factors that influence a person’s ability to access abortion—including individual knowledge and power, community and political support, trained and equipped health systems, and laws and policies that uphold the human rights to health and to bodily autonomy.
